Hardware & Electric Integration

Avionics & Electrical Integration Lead

Lead low-voltage power, avionics, harnesses, and the iron bird for a two-seat electric VTOL aircraft.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Role Overview

This lead owns the low-voltage power system, the avionics, and the iron bird of a two-seat electric VTOL aircraft, from rig build through ground test and flight, on a program targeting LSA certification. This is an individual contributor role on a lean discipline-lead team. You do the core work yourself and direct subcontractors where needed. You close your interfaces directly with the other discipline leads and carry the avionics and electrical position in aircraft-level trades. As the company grows, this role offers a path to building and leading a team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the low-voltage power architecture and distribution, and the requirements that define them.

  • Select the flight deck avionics and low-voltage equipment, and manage their suppliers.

  • Own the avionics and low-voltage harnesses, from design to fabrication and installation.

  • Own electromagnetic compatibility, protecting the avionics and flight control electronics from high-voltage system interference.

  • Build and operate the HIL and iron bird rigs, and plan their upgrade to flight hardware.

  • Integrate the flight control computer, sensors, and avionics on the rigs and the aircraft, and isolate faults across the electrical and software boundary.

  • Lead first power-on and ground test, including other system benches as needed.

  • Own the flight test instrumentation and the ground control station hardware.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years in avionics and electrical systems, with low-voltage power and harness design that has flown on a manned aircraft.

  • Has built and operated a HIL or iron bird rig for a new aircraft or vehicle.

  • Fluent in DO-160 qualification, EWIS design practice, and electromagnetic compatibility, and able to right-size that rigor to ASTM consensus standards on the LSA path.

  • 3+ years on a small engineering team, such as at a startup, a UAS company, or a prototype group within a larger company, owning work beyond a single specialty.

  • Has managed suppliers directly, from defining the work through accepting the hardware.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on a passenger eVTOL or manned electric aircraft program.

  • Experience with the high- and low-voltage interface on an electric aircraft or vehicle.

  • Has integrated a flight control computer and its sensors on a fly-by-wire aircraft.

  • Has built flight test instrumentation or a ground control station.

  • Has taken avionics and electrical systems into a certified production aircraft.
